Woman in Gold *** (Capsule Review)

Ryan Reynolds nicely shifts gears alongside Helen Mirren in this thoughtful drama

Is it worth $10? Yes

A Holocaust survivor (Helen Mirren) asks an unproven lawyer (Ryan Reynolds) to help retrieve a painting she believes belongs to her; years ago it was seized by the Nazis, and it is now in the possession of the Austrian government. The main storyline of the quest for the painting is a fascinating watch, but flashbacks to Holocaust Austria are a bore, largely because we've seen this type of thing so many times before. Still, it's an effective and heartfelt film that nicely showcases Reynolds in a dramatic role. Also stars Katie Holmes, Daniel Bruhl, Charles Dance ("Game of Thrones"), Max Irons and Elizabeth McGovern.
