Asshole Of The Week: The Bitch Who Wouldn’t Turn Off Her Phone

It's not hard: If you need to take a call, step outside the theater!

At a recent screening, in the middle of a movie an inconsiderate terror sitting next to me whipped out her phone. You do not do this near me at a screening.

But I tried to stay patient, ignore it. She did the old “take the phone out, put it away, then back out again” act, and each time I foolishly thought it would end. It did not. After a few minutes this putrid pile of crap answered a phone call, so she was talking in addition to casting a bright white light for the entire audience to be distracted by. At this point I couldn’t take anymore.

“Excuse me,” I politely said. “Please put your phone away.”

“What?” seems to be the response I always get.

<More forcefully> “Please put your phone away.”

“Just a minute.”

Whaaaaa??? How dare you?! Now I’m really mad. <Starting to raise my voice> “You’ve had the phone out for the last three minutes, put it away.”

<She points to the screen> “Just watch the movie.”

<Now loud enough for all near us to hear> “I can’t watch the movie because I’m too distracted by you being on your phone. PUT. IT. AWAY!”

“Fine.” <She puts it away, then looks at me as if I’m rude and did something wrong.>

Did I do something wrong? Common sense says to ask an usher or security guard to handle this, but to me that’s even more of a distraction because I have to get up, find an usher/security guard, explain everything, etc. Doing that, in my mind, takes me even further out of the movie than confronting the asshole myself.

How do people not understand how rude this is? I welcome your thoughts/feedback in the comments below.
